Mom Mondays: Gimme some crockpot love! Chef Hockey Mom Comes Home

Well, hello there…

Oh, now don’t look at me like that!

I know I’ve haven’t paying as much attention to you but that’s all about to change. I want you back in my life. I need you back in my life.

You know I’ve missed you. I’ve just been so busy enjoying this beautiful summer. I just needed to get out … be free … be me. You seemed to always be around begging for my attention. I was beginning to feel a little tied down to you all winter.

Actually, it wasn’t you, it was me. It’s not that I don’t love you it’s just that, well ok, there was someone else. It was Napoleon. Seems he was hanging out on my deck all winter but was watching and waiting … waiting to make his move. Well, the first warm day of spring, I couldn’t help it! I was besotted. His was firing all four burners and the scent. Oooooo, I couldn’t deny that scent. But I know now that Napolean – nothing more than a summer fling.

Summer is over and hockey season is back.

You know you’re still my steady, my partner. You’re just my hunk, my hunk of burning dinner.

Come here you big dishwasher-safe, handsome piece of stoneware. You’ve still got the best looking 7-quart pot I’ve ever seen. You don’t belong in the pantry. You need to be out here on the kitchen counter where I can see your big, bold stainless steel awesomeness. I need you, my sweet and reliable SlooooooowwCooker.

I promise I’ll make it up to you. I’ll fill you with the richest, sweetest piece of fresh meat you’ve ever seen … maybe even organic meat!

~~

There you have it, hockey moms! As you can see, my love affair with my crock pot is about to be revived. Lord knows our relationship – and the crockpot itself - got a little dusty after a summer of grilling and outdoor cooking. With the hockey season and a new school year underway, and the long, cold winter ahead, that ol’ crockpot will soon by my best friend once again.

Truth be told, I only have a handful of crockpot recipes that I use regularly. I generally have found most crockpot recipes are more disappointing than they are delicious. The majority of crockpot recipes call for meats that I find too fatty and unhealthy.

Nevertheless, the convenience of throwing a few ingredients into a pot in the morning, turning it on and forgetting about it is a blessing to hockey moms everywhere. Though there’s nothing wrong with making dinner with a telephone number once in a while, my go-to crockpot recipes have saved me from doing so too often. My crockpot has also delivered at a few hockey tournaments where I brought it along to warm up my frozen Sloppy Joe’s for a post-game condo dinner (in fact, many hotels allow crockpots in the rooms as well. Just be sure to check ahead of time!).

In case you’re curious what my go-to slow cooker recipes are, they include Weight Watchers Three bean and pork slow cooker chili, Kraft Canada’s Slow Cooker Chunky Chicken Chili, Food.com’s Slow Cooker Orange Chicken and Food.com’s Copycat Olive Garden Zuppa Toscano to name a few.

Whatever your family’s favourite hockey meal may be, I’m sure you’ll agree that a slow cooker is a great teammate to have in the kitchen during the busy hockey season.

Three cheers for the home team – and for renewing my vows of love with my crockpot!
