A late goal by the South Division All-Stars helped push them to a 4-3 victory of the North Division All-Stars.
After a weekend jam-packed of events, the teams got down to business on Jan. 8 for the Re/Max All-Star Game where the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League’s best took to the ice to showcase their skills at the Edmonton Terwillegar Rec Centre.
Karly McLeod, goaltender for the Spruce Grove Saints, allowed the winning goal in during the third period but played strong enough to gain notice from Olympic gold medalist Shannon Szabados. The Canadian women’s national hockey team goalie tweeted, “Just watched @KarlyMcleod play a stellar game in net for the Alberta Midget AAA Allstar game.
“It was really nice of her to give me a mention like that even though we lost—it was a really close game, too,” said McLeod, who has known Szabados from attending and now instructing at a Sylvan Lake goaltending school in the summer.
Szabados was the keynote speaker at the All-Star banquet on Saturday and answered questions from the players afterwards.
On Saturday afternoon, at the Tim Horton’s Skills Competition Sydney Smith (Medicine Hat Tigers) took the fastest skater compeittion finishing a lap in 14.06 seconds earning her a brand new pair of Bauer Skates. Sydney Laurin (Calgary Bruins) helped Team South win again in the hardest shot competition, crushing the puck with a 119 km/hr blast winning a Bauer one-piece stick for her effort.
Krystal Reithmayer (Sherwood Park Fury) helped Team North in a must-win situation after the South won the first two competitions, exploding four targets on six shots in the accuracy shooting event and winning herself a pair of Bauer gloves.
Team North then cruised to victory in the team relay with coach Darwin Bozek (Saints) organizing the winning strategy. In the goalie shootout, Kacy Rawlyk (Calgary Flyers) turned away 14 of 18 breakaways, winning herself a Bauer goalie stick.
Team South managed to score 19 goals on 54 chances, boosting them to win the overall points competition.
Players of the game went to Shae Labbe (Calgary Chaos) and Jessica Sekulic (Thunder) for the South and North respectively.
