The SIJHL’s most valuable player this season is...still to be determined.
But with just over two weeks to go in the regular season schedule, it was announced that three players are finalists for the MVP award.
They are snipers Byron Katapaytuk and Chris Hoffman, who play for the Fort Frances Lakers and Sioux Lookout Flyers, respectively, and Wisconsin Wilderness goalie Tanner Milliron.
Both Katapaytuk and Hoffman were in the running to win the league’s scoring title this season.
Katapaytuk, who is an assistant captain for the Lakers, was leading the way with 76 points (29G, 47A) in 47 games. Hoffman was tied for second (with his teammate Anthony Wolfe) in the scoring race with 72 points.
Hoffman though had a league-high 46 goals in 47 games.
As for Milliron, he’s been simply sensational for the Wilderness this season. The 20-year-old puckstopper leads the league in several statistical categories.
He had the best goals-against average, a sparkling .158 through 31 appearances. Milliron was also leading the SIJHL in wins (26), shutouts (6) and save percentage average (.938).
League officials also announced the finalists for seven other league awards. Those finalists were for the coach of the year, best defenceman, top rookie, top goalie, best defensive forward, most improved player and most sportsmanlike awards.
Besides vying for the MVP award, Milliron is also a finalist in the top goalie category.
The majority of the awards up for grabs feature three finalists.
But there are five finalists in the running for the most sportsmanlike trophy.
