For the second year in a row, the Surrey Peewee Tier 1 Falcons have won their home tournament.

The Falcons cruised through five teams to become the Super Heart Tournament champions. The tournament, held from Feb. 3 to 5 had the Falcons defeating Chilliwack 4-0 in the final.

“We have a pretty balanced team so nobody really stood out in any one game,” said Falcons coach Mark Taylor. “One line could be extremely hot where all the players scored and it was a different line the next game. Somebody else would always step up, so it was a really good team effort.”

Consistent play from both of the Falcons goalies saw the tandem record four shutouts in the five games. Goaltenders Beverly Lynch and Rosetta Maggio split the championship win over Chilliwack. Mya Taylor notched two of the four goals for the Falcons in the championship game.

“Both goalies were playing great so in the final game we thought we would put both in so they both got to experience the finals,” said Taylor.

Other wins included a 8-0 win over Chilliwack in round-robin play, a 2-0 win over West Kootenay, a 4-0 victory over Vernon and a 5-1 winning effort for the Falcons over Abbotsford.

“We have got a great group that work extremely hard and they are very supportive of one another. It has been a magical year,” said Taylor. “Now we look forward to going back to league action where we are in second place, one point behind North Shore. We expect to battle-it-out with them and Richmond for the provincial championships.”

The Falcons also won the Hayley Wickenheiser tournament and a Vernon tournament, earlier in the season. The team lost in the semi-finals to a squad from Anaheim at the MLK tournament in San Jose, California, last month.

In the Bantam Tier 1 final, the Tri City Predators squeaked by Prince George, beating them 2-1. Elexa Pakozda struck first for the Predators but Prince George knotted the game 1-1 halfway through the second period. With about 11 minutes left in the third period Predators Lindsey Ackerman scored the game winner for the Predators. The win was revenge for the Predators whose only two losses this year came at the hands of Prince George in a tournament in Kelowna.

“We held on at the end because they came at us pretty hard. Our defence is pretty solid and did a good job at weathering the storm. Our goalie Sam Shaw also made some really good saves late in the game,” said Predators coach Frank Pakozda.

Shaw earned three shutouts in round robin play with a 4-0 win over Kamloops, 4-0 win over Prince George and a 5-0 win over West Kootenay in the semi-finals. The Predators also defeated a team from Fairbanks, Alaska 3-1. Defence also came up big for the Predators with team captain Harlowe Steele, Whitney Dove and Marissa Chau holding the line.

“All of our defence played well and moved the puck very well. They don’t crack under pressure. Then we had some clutch scoring by our forwards,” said the Predators coach.

The Super Heart Tournament featured two PeeWee and Bantam tiers this year and an Atom Tier 1 division. Over 500 girls participated in the tournament.

In Bantam Tier 2 finals action the Tri City Predators defeated Chilliwack 4-3. The Tri City Predators also took the PeeWee Tier 1 championship shutting out 100 Mile 6-0. South Delta beat Nanaimo 2-1 for the Atom Tier 1 title.
