When it comes to elite hockey, OneHockey means business.
As their website claims, OneHockey is all about creating “One tournament you will never forget.” And it doesn’t take long to see what all the buzz is about.
In the summer of 2004, OneHockey had been, for the previous five years, operating AAA level summer hockey teams that traveled North America playing in the best tournaments they could find.
But while the players on the teams were certainly burgeoning young stars, the tournaments, according to OneHockey, just weren’t at the same elite level.
So in 2004, OneHockey decided to run its own elite level summer tournament out of Sherbrooke, Que. And to say it flourished would do the tournament a disservice.
Within two years, the tournament outgrew Sherbrooke and was relocated to Aston, Pennsylvania, which is just over 30 kilometres southwest of Philadelphia. There, the highly-scouted and reputation-garnering tournament continued to grow.
Now, OneHockey conducts five tournaments across North America – a girls’ tournament in Pennsylvania and boys’ tournaments in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Alberta and B.C. – and these aren’t just like any tournaments.
OneHockey scouts players throughout the winter and invites the best of the best to its tournaments where players are teamed up with other players of similar talent from all over the world for what has become, in some places, a two-week hockey bonanza.
Individual players, and occasionally teams, have come from 13 different countries and in the eight years since the first tournament in 2004, OneHockey has had more than 15,000 players compete in its tournaments.
And unlike nearly every other minor hockey tournament in the world, all games are broadcasted live online through Fast Hockey.
The tournament also has coaches who have led teams at the highest level of hockey, with bench bosses having spent time coaching everything from the NHL to the NCAA to the Junior A circuit.
Players like 2011 NHL first round pick Tyler Biggs and 2011 second round pick Rocco Grimaldi are products of these tournaments, proving that OneHockey is the place to be.
This year, OneHockey is coming to B.C. with tournaments to be held at Planet Ice in Delta and Coquitlam for kids born between 1996 and 2000.
If you’re an elite level hockey player this is where you should be next summer. The scouts will be there, it’s summer hockey at its absolute finest and they guarantee you’ll have the time of your life.
