If you thought teams were stressing special teams prior to this season, the implementation of the headshot rule has made staying out of the penalty box the number one focus for many teams, including Burnaby Bantam A2.
The squad went 4-3-1 in exhibition play with a roster that wasn’t finalized, so the next few weeks of tiering will give the coaching staff a good look at what the group is capable of.
“We’re a good skating team and look solid in goal, so we’ve got to focus on good discipline and playing structured hockey,” said head coach Rick Hale.
The problem with good discipline this year is going to be figuring out exactly what it means. Referees are still trying to get a grasp on what constitutes a headshot, and since ‘contact with the face’ is included under the penalty’s umbrella, players have been going to the box for seemingly small infractions.
“It’s tough for kids to get used to. We’ve found out the hard way with lots of four minute penalties,” Hale said. “It’s a learning curve for everybody.”
