The Kelowna A1 Peewee Jr. Rockets defeated the Richmond A1 Peewee Blues 6-2 in the championship game Sunday to win the Seventh Annual Gil Martin Memorial Peewee ‘AAA’ Tournament.

The tournament, hosted by the Langley Minor Hockey Association, is named in memory of Gil Martin, who passed away in 2005 and was very involved in the LMHA.

There were 12 teams in three groups.

“There was some great competition at this tournament,” said Kelowna’s head coach Brian Cullen. “It was a well-run event and was a lot of fun.”

The Rockets may not have been the favourite to win the tournament but matched-up well against the Lower Mainland’s top squads.

“We kind of changed our game plan for the Burnaby Winter Club game,” said Cullen about his team’s quarter-final tilt. “We moved to a hunting-the-puck method. We’re smaller but faster than them so we tried to use that to our advantage and it worked because we didn’t allow them to make that first pass out of the zone.”

After finishing seventh among the 12 teams – the top eight advance – Kelowna faced the No. 2-seeded BWC and beat them, 6-1.

“We really wanted to play them in this tournament because we haven’t seen them yet, this year,” said Cullen.

The semifinal pitted Kelowna against the host Langley A1 Eagles and the visitors prevailed 3-1.

“We’ve played them a couple times this season,” said Cullen, mentioning the exhibition games were split. “That game was a big test for us. We know that them, BWC and North Shore [Winter Club] are the top teams down here on the coast.”

The Richmond Blues up-ended the Ridge Meadows A1 Rustlers in the other semifinal, setting up the meeting with Kelowna in the final.

The other teams competing were the Semiahmoo A1 Ravens, Abbotsford A1 Hawks, Seafair A1 Islanders, Vancouver A1 Thunderbirds, Coquitlam A1 Chiefs, and the 2010 champs South Delta A1 Storm.
