If you are old enough to recall the year when Sputnik was sent into orbit or the year that the city of White Rock was incorporated, you might also recall another historic moment: the inaugural Peewee Jamboree in Chilliwack. The eventful year in question was 1957.
“People keep coming back,” said Bonnie Ohlsen of Chilliwack Minor Hockey. “We have coaches who have played in the tournament in the past and now that they’re coaching they bring their teams to it.”
While the tournament draws interest from the same core teams year after year, Ohlsen said new teams continue to show an interest in the competition. “We just got an inquiry from a team in Germany who wants to participate next year. They’re pre-planning already.”
This year’s lineup will be less internationally focused than that, with many of the teams being from the Lower Mainland. Asked what draws teams to the event aside from tradition, Ohlsen credited solid organization and simply a fun overall atmosphere.
“We try to have prizes at every game, there’s MVP prizes and we have lots of donations and draw prizes,” she said “but in terms of hockey, each team plays at least four games and the kids have lots of fun.”
