“Get better.”
That’s been the simplified mantra for the Juvenile team this year, and so far, everything has gone according to plan. After qualifying for Tier 2 thanks to a strong tiering round, the squad finds themselves at the top of the second group heading into the Christmas break with a record of 7-2, and they’re riding a four-game winning streak thanks to victories over Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam last week.
“Our goal was to place in three, play in two, and playoff in one, and so far the plan as we’d discussed seems to be coming to fruition,” said head coach Dan Melanson, referring to the tiers the team has had to climb on their journey this season. “We’ve established a decent lineup where everybody has their roles and reps and our game plan seems to be working.”
Up front, the line of Chris Harrison, Dylan Sernaggia and Paul Chima continues to overwhelm opponents, while blueliner Daniel Cayer has been rock solid on the backend.
One of the main reasons the club has enjoyed success this season is because of a collective lack of ego that has let the offensive players flourish while everyone else recognizes their jobs and executes them accordingly. They’ve shortened the bench, deciding to dress 15 skaters on game day instead of 17, which allows everyone enough ice time to be happy.
“It’s something we did in collaboration and agreement from the team, and it seems to be working so far,” Melanson said.
The next big test the team faces is against Ridge Meadows on December 27, a team that beat them 4-3 in their last loss earlier this month.
