The Juan de Fuca Grizzlies A2 team took the Peewee A1 division gold in Chilliwack over the holidays.
Round robin play saw the Grizzlies get off to a shaky start, losing to Chilliwack (5-6) and South Delta (3-5).
Co-coach Bill Sidaway praised his team's effort in taking corrective action.
“I felt we started off the tournament slow trying to find our legs and struggled with our PK, which is typically good,” he said. “After our third game we were 1-2. We had a meeting and talked about team defence and taking away shooting lanes.”
The Grizzlies shut down the opposition when it counted, blanking the South Delta Storm 4-0 in the semi-finals and stymying the Cloverdale Colts by a 3-0 score in the final.
“We started a little bit rusty, being after Christmas and all,” said Grizzlies co-coach Chris Kueber. “But the last couple of games, the boys stepped up and played unbelievable.”
Keuber hopes that his team will be able to use this tournament win as a catalyst for the rest of the season. “We knew the talent has always been there, but I think they finally realized what their potential was. They now know that when they go to the mainland that they can compete with anyone in B.C., so it was a huge win for the boys.”
The Peewee C division was largely composed of local Chilliwack teams.
After beating cross-town rivals Chilliwack C1 by a score of 3-2 in the semi-finals, the cleverly named C4 Explosives took first place, securing a 3-2 win in the final.
