It’s a fine line between team toughness and a lack of discipline, a line that the Hollyburn Huskies Bantam A2 squad straddle frequently.
Boasting enough scoring and a defence capable of dictating the tone, it is their physical play that puts them over the top on most nights.
A case in point came when they took on Vancouver Bantam A2 on Jan. 21, as their physical edge created both opportunities and problems.
Already with a 1-0 lead, the Huskies were able to convert on a late first period powerplay, extending their lead to two.
Then, after creating a turnover on the forecheck, they widened the lead to 3-0 by the end of the frame.
In the second period, however, the Huskies defence tried to get a bit too physical with the Vancouver forwards, resulting in two prolonged 5-3 opportunities. The Huskies scraped through these disadvantages and capped their superb special teams play with another power-play goal to make it a 4-0 final.
Assistant coach Tim Keller was happy with his team’s performance, but alluded to how a lack of discipline put them into an unnecessary situation for the second time in as many games.
“We were probably guilty of taking some undisciplined penalties, but our goalie Ben was outstanding,” said Keller. “We had a tough one yesterday (a 3-1 loss to Port Moody) where some discipline probably cost us, so it was good to see us persevere tonight. It was good that we could be effective when a man down, but in the end we have to be more disciplined if we want to have success.”
To date, that success has been frequent. The Huskies have pushed and shoved their way to the top of the flight six standings with 11 wins in 17 games.
