Eight teams from B.C., Alberta and Washington will gather in Vernon the second weekend of February for the 41st Annual Coca-Cola Classic Peewee Tournament.
The Vernon Mustangs will be joined by the Vancouver Thunderbirds, South Delta Storm, and Juan De Fuca Grizzlies from B.C., the Edmonton Raiders and Bow Valley Flames from Alberta and the Spokane Jr. Chiefs and Seattle Sno Kings from the state of Washington.
Besides the host Mustangs, Juan De Fuca and Spokane return from last year’s tournament lineup that even included a team from Anchorage. Last February the St. Albert Raiders defeated the Simons Valley Rebels in the ‘A’ Final.
The ‘A’ Final champion receives the Amy Myles Trophy. What is unique about the Coca-Cola Classic is that four trophies are awarded for each of the A, B, C, and D finals, giving each team a 50 per cent chance of leaving with a trophy, even if they only have a 12.5 per cent chance of winning the overall title. Also awarded are the Alex Kuly Trophy, Mickey McMahon Trophy, and Mickey Ogasarawa Trophy.
Also, there are no ties – each game tied after regulation is decided by sudden death overtime.
The tournament is held in conjunction with the Vernon Winter Carnival. The tournament runs Feb. 9 to 12 and spectators can buy tickets for $4 per day ($3 for children) or $10 for the entire tournament (children $5).
The ‘A’ final will be held Sunday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Vernon’s Civic Arena.
The tournament has featured some of the best peewee teams in western Canada and boasts alumni such as NHL veteran Ray Whitney and B.C.-bred AHL players Ben Walter, Riley Nash and Zach Hamill.
