A Toronto arena that is celebrating its golden anniversary this season will once again be the site of a select tournament.
The George Bell Titans Select Hockey Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 24 to 26.
All games will be staged at the George Bell Arena, which is in its 50th year of operations this season.
The tournament will feature 16 teams. They will be competing in four divisions; Major Atom, Minor Peewee, Major Peewee and Minor Bantam.
Each division will have four entrants. The host George
Bell Titans will be represented in all four categories.
“I think we have some pretty strong teams,” said tournament director Gillian Concannon. “I think we have a good shot at winning at least one of the divisions. But I don’t want to brag too much about our teams - that’s not the reason we have the tournament. It’s for everybody to have fun.”
No doubt though players from the host organization will want to fare well.
“It’s a local tournament and they’re hosting it and the season is coming to an end,” she said.
The George Bell squads should also have plenty of supporters cheering them on.
“A lot of parents, grandparents and extended family will be out watching the games,” Concannon said.
The majority of the participating clubs will be from Toronto and surrounding areas. But there will be two clubs from Niagara Falls and one from out-of-province (Quebec) also taking part.
The Niagara Falls clubs are entered in the Major Atom and Major Peewee divisions. And the Quebec-based side is also in the Major Peewee grouping.
Concannon added teams will want to fare well at this event as they will soon be entering their own post-season schedules. Thus, the event for some will be a playoff tuneup.
“I guess you could say that,” she said.
