There’s no denying the high quality of play that is witnessed each year at the Gloria Rints Memorial International Silver Stick Tournament.
This year’s event, which featured seven age groupings, attracted 122 teams from Canada and the United States. The tourney was held from Nov. 24 to 27.
The tournament included four divisions for AAA clubs; Minor Atom, Minor Peewee, Minor Bantam and Minor Midget.
“It’s the top teams in North America that come to this,” said tournament chairman Del Rints. “It’s strictly an invitational event.”
The event was renamed in honour of Rints’ wife, who was a tournament co-chair. She died in 1994.
For those at the AAA level, the tournament served as the International Silver Stick championship finals.
The event also featured three divisions for AA squads, who were participating in an International Silver Stick Regional tourney. They competed in Minor Atom, Minor Peewee and Minor Bantam groupings.
“I take them as they phone me,” Rints said of the AA clubs.
The winners from these three categories advance to their championship final events, which will be staged in Newmarket in January.
Since this is the Ontario Hockey League draft year for players in the Minor Midget grouping, the tournament was heavily scouted.
“All OHL teams were represented,” Rints said. “And I don’t think there is a Junior team in Ontario that wasn’t represented at the tournament.”
The Toronto Marlboros defeated the Cleveland Barons 7-1 in the Minor Midget championship final.
The Marlboros also won the Minor Bantam AAA division.
The other champions were Toronto Junior Canadiens (Minor Atom AAA), Mississauga Rebels (Minor Peewee AAA), Mississauga North Stars (Minor Atom AA), Oakville Ranges (Minor Peewee AA) and Etobicoke Canucks (Minor Bantam AA).

I am just releasing a new product called Sock Trap. It is developed to replace the use of plastic hockey tape now being used to hold up hockey socks. It will save money, time and the environment. I would welcome and feedack you may have. Henry
