Several dozen hockey teams will once again converge in Vaughan this holiday season looking not only for glory at that tournament but hopefully in a future one as well.
This marks the 19th year that the Vaughan Rangers are hosting an International Silver Stick Regional Tournament.
The event, which runs Dec. 27 to 29, will feature 56 A teams, ranging from Minor Atom through to Midget.
They’ll compete in eight divisions.
All category winners will advance to their respective International Silver Stick finals tournaments, which begin at various points in January.
Those at the Vaughan event can qualify for championship tournaments that will be held in Newmarket, Sarnia or Port Huron, Michigan.
The host Rangers will have one of their clubs participate in each of the eight divisions at the Vaughan regional tournament.
“At least two of our teams I think have a very good chance of making it to their international finals,” said tournament spokesperson Paola Visentin said. “We’ve got a few good ones this year.”
Two of the Rangers’ squads expected to fare well compete at the Atom A and Minor Midget A levels.
Visentin is predicting success for these teams based on their early season successes thus far.
“Having said that, this is hockey and anything goes,” she said.
Visentin added she anticipates the tournament’s Peewee A grouping will be hotly contested. This division features the top three teams thus far from the GTHL’s West Division as well as the top four clubs from the Mississauga Hockey League.
