Last issue, Hockey Now previewed the Bauer Challenge Cup, which will be taking place from Dec. 27 to 30 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The players and teams are ready to compete for top spot in the Peewee (1999) division. Here are a few of the many talented players to look out for at the tournament:
Ryan Israel (Forward) – Toronto Titans
Israel is the team’s leader up front and a big power forward. He has depth and touch around the net. He knows how to score and plays physical, so he always gives his opponents all they can handle in the corners and around the net.
Markus Phillips (Defenceman) – Toronto Titans
Phillips is an offensive-minded defenceman and is extremely good at breaking the puck out of his own end. He likes to lead the rush, is a quarterback on the power play, and has both a great shot and vision.
Jordan DiCicco (Defenceman) – London Jr. Knights
DiCicco is the Knights’ captain and likes to lead by example. In 36 games played this year, he’s amassed 12 goals, 19 assists and an impressive plus-39. He is a smooth skater, puck handler and has a strong slapshot from the point.
Isaac Ratcliffe (Forward) – London Jr. Knights
Ratcliffe is one of the team’s leaders, and is a skilled puck handler who sees the ice well. In 36 games, he has scored 24 goals, 16 assists and is plus-37.
Although he was asked to choose a couple of his top players, Steve, Sherry, head coach for the London Jr. Knights said he is proud of all of them.
“The London Jr. Knight AAA Peewee team in its entirety has a strong roster, great work ethic and work together as a team,” Sherry said. “I am proud of each and every one of the players and the strengths they bring to the team.”
Marlboros head coach Richard Mcleod said he couldn’t pick one particular player if he had to:
“If there was anything you could write about our team is that we are in fact a team. We don’t keep personal stats and I couldn’t even tell you who are top scorer was, because every night it is a different kid stepping up. This mind set has been our success, and the unselfish discipline play is what differentiates the Marlboros from all other teams at the ‘99 age group. If you are watching the club, watch them all and how they work together on the ice to create chances and outsmart their opponents.”
