This event is a Silver Stick tournament that takes place Dec. 27 to 30, at the William Allman and Duffern arenas, along with Rotary Complex in Stratford, Ont.
The many hotels, shops, restaurants and businesses sponsor and promote through special pricing, which, over the years, has made the tournament a highly regarded community Christmas event.
“Over the years, the tournament has given youngsters a chance to demonstrate their hockey skills while engaging in a competition geared towards promoting international goodwill and sportsmanship,” says Chairman Gary Lingard. “Teams from Minor Atom to Major Midget will play a round robin along with playoffs.”
The winners will receive medallions and a silver stick banner and awarded the qualification to compete in the prestigious International Silver Stick Tournament in Port Huron, Michigan for the Peewee and Bantam finals, Sarnia, Ont. for the Atom and Midget Finals and Newmarket, Ont., the host venue for the Minor Atom, Minor Peewee, Minor Bantam and Minor Midget Finals.
There is also a Big Six drawing with proceeds being split between the two organizations, which is the major fundraiser for the year.
Former NHL player Tim Taylor, who also coaches a team, is always a big attraction for the kids as well as the parents and fans.
Taylor is also one of the biggest sponsors.
Lingard says the tournament each year brings out lots of kids.
“We have a total of 58 teams and the Stratford area has a lot to offer,” explains Lingard. “The opening ceremony is always exciting. The local mayor comes out to drop the puck and it always draws various NHL players.”
