Mission impossible? Not for this Chicago Peewee team. The Chicago Mission traveled to the Hershey Centre in Mississauga to compete at the Bauer Challenge Cup and left as champions.
The tournament had 20 teams compete in the Peewee (1999) division, from across Ontario and the U.S.
The Chicago Mission became the second-consecutive American team to win the tournament, defeating the Toronto Nationals by a score of 3-1 in the finals.
The Chicago Mission made it to the finals by defeating the Toronto Marlboros 2-1, on a shorthanded goal in the third period.
The Toronto Nationals defeated Detroit Compuware 3-2 in overtime to qualify for the finals.
Chicago was led by Sean Dhooghe, who scored 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in seven games to help his team secure the victory.
According to Jeff Stewart, the tournament’s organizer, the Bauer Challenge Cup has had several current and former players graduate from this tournament and go on to compete in the NHL.
Current and former NHL players that have competed at the Bauer Challenge Cup include: Steve Stamkos, Jason Spezza, Patrick Kane, Rick Nash, Mike Cammalleri, Eric Lindros, Brendan Shanahan, Adam Graves, and many others. Don Cherry has also frequented the tournament.
The Bauer Challenge Cup took place from Dec. 27 to 30, 2011.
