Whatever It Takes, We Walk Together.
That’s the motto the Toronto Junior Canadiens’ Minor Atom AAA squad has adopted this season. And by sticking to this thinking, the club was able to capture yet another tournament title.
The team won all six of its matches at the Canadiens Cup, a seven-club tournament that it played host to from Dec. 27 to 29.
The Junior Canadiens downed the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs 3-1 in the championship final.
“When they play as a team, they can’t be beat,” said Nunus Molu, the team manager.
The Junior Canadiens outscored their rivals 23-3 in their four round-robin matches at the Canadiens Cup. Then they earned a berth in the final by edging the Markham Waxers 2-1 in their semi-final contest.
Besides winning their own tournament, the Junior Canadiens had also captured titles in three out of the four other events they’ve entered this season.
For starters, they won a September tournament in Etobicoke. Then they took top honours at a Detroit tourney in October. And they once again emerged with a title at their Silver Stick tournament in Whitby in November.
The only tournament thus far they didn’t win was the Shanahan International in Mississauga in November. The Junior Canadiens were finalists at that event.
Molu said the team is successful as it emphasizes a team-first attitude.
“He doesn’t try to build a championship team,” Molu said of the team’s head coach Fonz Carogioiello. “He tries to build little champions.”
A strong desire to win each time out has also proven beneficial.
“In 99.9 per cent of the games they’ve played this season they go in hungry because they want to win,” Molu said.
