Despite some success, the Toronto City Blues Bantam AA squad was not able to advance past round-robin action at its own tournament.

It was one of 44 A and AA teams participating in the three-day Escape The Blues Tournament, which concluded on Feb. 5.

The tournament, which has been running for seven years, was held at Toronto’s Chesswood Arenas. It featured six divisions, including the Bantam AA grouping which attracted six teams.

Besides getting two points for a win, in round-robin play clubs could also earn a point for each period they outscored their rivals. Teams were awarded half a point if they had the same amount of goals in a period.

“There is a slightly different strategy,” said John Ord, the coach of the Toronto City Blues Bantam AA side. “But you still play to win.”

Ord’s team lost its opener 2-0 against the Sudbury-area Nickel City Rebels. Trailing 1-0 the Rebels pulled their goalie for an extra attacker late in the game.

The move backfired.  And it cost the City Blues a half point in the standings that they would have earned if the third period had been scoreless.

The City Blues rebounded from this setback to edge a Sudbury side 4-3 in its second match.

“Heading into our final games Sudbury, Nickel City and us were all tied (for second place) with 5.5 points,” Ord said.

While the City Blues earned 3.5 points for their convincing 7-1 victory over the West Mall Lightning, Nickel City advanced to the tournament final by earning the maximum five points in its 6-0 shutout over the Leaside Kings.

The Rebels edged the Mississauga North Stars, who had placed first in the round-robin standings, 2-1 in the championship final.
