Not too many goalies can say their second shutout trumps their first ever in a Team Canada jersey, but Emerance Maschmeyer can.
The Bruderheim native, who plays in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Lloydminster Bobcats, turned aside 10 shots at the U18 Women’s World Hockey Championship in preliminary action to earn a 7-0 convincing victory over Finland. It was her first shutout in international play. But, it was the one that came just five days later on Jan. 7 in Zlin, Czech Republic, that helped Canada to gold in a 3-0 win over rival United States, that will be most memorable.
This time, Maschmeyer turned aside 16 shots, and with the help of Alexis Crossley and Sarah Lefort, Canada jumped to the 2-0 lead in the first period. Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the third period when Cydney Roesler put in a powerplay goal clinching the win for Canada.
Maschmeyer graciously gave the praise for the win after her first shutout to her teammates.
“It was a great feeling I didn’t get too many shots but I have to thank my team for playing well in front of me,” she said. “My team played an amazing game and I didn’t get too much action, but I did make sure I was confident and stayed focused on the game.”
For Team Canada teammate Erika Sowchuk, who plays at the Edge School, she notched one assist at her first World U18 championship. Shannon MacAulay, who plays with the Warner School, had two assists in the tournament including one in the gold medal game.
The win over the U.S. was the second time Canada has won gold at this event in its five-year history.
