Great drills emulate elements of our game while simultaneously challenging our players’ physical and mental skills. This simple to set up shooting drill works on quick-up stretch passes and outside shots. The stretch pass is a vital part of our game that needs to be continually developed.
Place all players and pucks behind opposite bluelines.
On the whistle, the first players in each line skate with a puck across the blueline, and pass the puck to the first player in the opposite line.
After passing the puck, both players skate towards the far blueline and then skate back towards the middle to receive a stretch pass from their original line.
After receiving the stretch pass, these players skate in for a shot on net.
The next two players leave on the coach’s whistle, or if the coach doesn’t want to blow the whistle, they create eye contact and leave at the same time with pucks.
COACHING KEYS
This drill should be executed quickly and with tape-to-tape stretch pass perfection. Make sure that your players are prepared and ready to execute. The receiver can help develop better passes by being vocal.
