As co-hosts of the Second Annual Edge Fall Classic Hockey Tournament, both the Gold and Maroon Mountaineers will strive to win their respective divisions to set up an exciting final.

“We’d obviously love to have a Gold-Maroon final,” said Gold coach Ross McCain. “A lot of them are buddies off the ice, but when they get on it’s pretty neat to see how they battle against each other.”

Of course, the 12 other teams competing at the Fall Classic will have something to say about that.

“By the looks of it, we’ve got 14 really strong teams,” McCain said. “The competition’s going to be really good this year. We wanted to make sure that the compete-level was as high as it could be every single game.”

The Fort Saskatchewan Rangers will be back to defend their tournament title, while Alberta will also be represented by the Beaumont Braves, St. Albert Blues, Medicine Hat Venom, Sylvan Lake Lakers, SHC (Morinville) Mustangs, South Side Athletic Club (Edmonton), NE Alberta Panthers and NE Calgary Blazers.

British Columbia will send a pair of teams, the Vernon Vipers and Pursuit of Excellence, while Manitoba will be represented by the Winnipeg City Monarchs.

Maroon coach Mike Carlsen said his players are excited about faring well at their own tournament.

“They’ll play some different teams that we don’t normally see in the regular season,” Carlsen said. “It’ll be a good experience. It’s always good when they get the chance to play in front of their classmates.”

A strong result at the Fall Classic could go a long ways to either or both of the Edge Midget AA teams having success down the road.

“You play so many games in a short time,” McCain said. “If you happen to get the right bounces and come out on the winning end, you can really build a lot of momentum and a lot of times it will carry into the rest of the season.”
