Edmonton Lightning forward Liz Salyn continues to tear-up the scoring leaders board in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League.
With 17 points in 26 games she is helping bolster the Lightnings position of second in the North division as they chase down the first place St. Albert Raiders.
The Lightning went through a bit of a slump in November losing three straight but have bounced back with two wins to open December against the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs and shutting-out the Calgary Rangers.
Goaltender Monica Hansen earned the shutout win.
The St. Albert Raiders have lost only one game in their last 10 as they headed into their final match of 2011 against the Sherwood Park Royals.
After 17 games they were one of the highest scoring teams in the league (tied with Lightning) thanks to Megan Lalor and Kennedy Bozek. Abigail Benning, Lauren MacMaster and Jenna Jewell round out the top five scorers on the team.
The Sherwood Park Royals posted their first win of the season on Dec. 3 with a 4-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes with Katie Gotaas and Joelle Harder each potting two goals and Renee Schmaltz getting the win between the pipes.
The Calgary Outlaws continue to claw their way back after a slow start to the season, having not lost a game since their Oct. 30 2-1 loss to the Calgary Rangers.
“The south division is a lot tighter this year with more trading of wins and loses. We still have lots of ground to go yet and in the South anyone can challenge for first place,” said Outlaws coach Kevin Keenan.
Emma Keenan has developed into a very versatile player for the Outlaws. The defenceman, who has also played forward this year, leads the team in scoring with 12 points through 15 games. Dealing with injuries and players away on holidays Emma was put onto a forward line.
“She has developed a pretty good touch around the net,” said the coach. “When we drafted we took extra d in the mix to make them forwards which explains some of the scoring issues we had early on but they all have been coming along really well lately.”
