Not counting the World Juniors, which managed a reasonable turnout in Calgary and Edmonton earlier this month, there is simply nothing that compares to the sheer size of Esso Minor Hockey Week.
Sure, the Juniors sold 650,000 tickets, but it couldn’t hold a candle to the 8,600 boys and girls who suited up Jan. 12 to 21 in pursuit of divisional gold. This year’s event crowned 59 champions across the city and brought multitudes of smiles to the faces of players, parents and coaches.
For the 33rd year in a row, Esso stepped-up as the title sponsor for the event, which counted on the cash to run the rinks, but also on the voluntary efforts of more than 4,000 volunteers and 475 referees and linesmen to make it all happen.
Minor Hockey Week truly is a celebration of the sport.
Hockey Heroes game coming to Calgary
While Remembrance Day is reserved so that we never forget the sacrifices of our nation’s brave soldiers, every day of the year can be a day we can show those same soldiers our appreciation.
On Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m., the Scotiabank Saddledome will host the Heroes Hockey Challenge, a fundraising game between some of the NHL’s all-time great alumni and a squad of Canada’s truest heroes – our military servicemen and women.
All proceeds for the event and donations go to the Princess Patricia Light Infantry Foundation. Tickets are $30 and are available through Ticketmaster or at the Saddledome. Visit www.en.heroeshockeychallenge.com or visit them on Facebook.
Springbank Midget 4 Rockies raise $70,000
The pediatric oncology unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital was the beneficiary of one group of players’ selfless efforts over Christmas.
The Springbank Midget 4 Rockies fundraised $35,000 through their home tournament Dec. 19 to 22, which was matched by Pacesetter Directional Drilling, the employer of head coach Dustin Aasen. The team raised funds through the sale of raffle tickets at the tournament.
Dinos to host Minor Hockey Night
The NHL doesn’t beckon us all, but the university ranks can be a comfortable next best thing for the wannabe Crosbys amongst us.
Which is why the University of Calgary Dinos will launch its inaugural Dinos Minor Hockey Night on Jan. 27 at Father David Bauer Arena. The Dinos will play host to the University of Regina that night at 7:00 p.m. and one lucky team will be drawn to take a tour of the Dinos’ dressing room following the game.
In addition players who attend the game wearing any of their community association’s clothing will be earn a ballot for a chance to practice with the Dinos’ men’s hockey team.
Minor Hockey Night will be filled with numerous other prizes and giveaway, and promises to be a great night out for the whole family.
