They came, they played, and despite a few frowns and the odd tear, the gross majority went home from the 49th Annual QuikCard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week with memories to last a lifetime.

More than 8,500 players took part in this year’s 10-day event, which wrapped up on Jan. 22 at the Terwillegar Recreation Centre when the last of 72 gold-medal teams were awarded their prizes. All totaled more than 3,000 people volunteered their time to ensure this year’s tournament was as successful as ever including dozens of local referees who volunteered to officiate all 739 games.

“The tradition of the tournament is about fair play and fun and we couldn’t achieve that without the efforts of all of our volunteers,” said tournament chair Rod McMahon.

Stollery Family Day Tournament

With Minor Hockey Week tucked neatly away for another year the focus for many Edmonton-area teams now will be on the up-coming Stollery Family Day Classic tournament, which runs Feb. 17 to 22 at the Terwilligar Recreation Centre.

The tournament is completely booked at this point, but for those looking at finding a tournament for next season, the Stollery tournament would be worth checking out. A non-contact event, the tournament features divisions from Novice through to Bantam with a variety of divisions in every age group and four games guaranteed for every team.

While only in its second year, the Stollery tournament is on the road to a long and successful tradition. In addition to promoting fair play and skill, the tournament helped raise more than $180,000 for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Hockey Edmonton Development.

Estephan continues torrid pace in AMBHL

The 50-goal mark may be out of reach, but Giorgio Estephan may just hit the century mark in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League this season.

The 14-year-old has picked up 32 goals and 77 points in his first 26 games for the SSAC Southgate Lions this year and short of an injury has locked up the league’s scoring title for the 2011/12 campaign. Estephan leads teammate Tyler Bensen (22 goals, 63 points) and Calgary Bisons sniper Nick Merkley (34 goals, 62 points) by a considerable margin with seven games to go.

The Lions lead the Nitro North division with a 20-3-3 record and an eye-popping 152 goals for this season.

Northwest squads leading charge in Peewee Clagget Division

Times are good in Northwest Edmonton – at least if you’re a Peewee hockey player in the Clagget division.

The Northwest Renegades finished the second round of the Federation Hockey season with a perfect 6-0-0 record to stand atop the division. It was a vast improvement over the team’s 3-3-0 record in Round 1 and served notice to the league that driving into Castledowns would be trouble regardless of the team you faced.

After all, the first round of the season was owned by the NWZ Raiders, the Renegades’ local rival. The Raiders slipped a bit in the second round, finishing 3-3-0 after rattling off a sparkling 7-1-0 record in round one.
