Here come tryouts! If your tryouts haven’t arrived yet, they will be coming soon. Coaches are always looking for drills that will help with skill evaluation.

This Boards Puck-Chase Drill is a simple way to evaluate skating, starting, speed, and agility, while at the same time, providing fun for the players as they race for the puck.

All players line-up on each side of the red line, in four lines along the boards.

Leave a little room at the red line for the first two skaters up.

On the coach’s whistle, two players from each side of the red line (four players at once) skate towards their opposite boards, touch the boards with their stick while coming to a full stop, and then sprint towards the puck in the middle of the ice on the blue lines.

Let the 1-on-1 battle play out a little, and then stop the play at both ends with the whistle.

Work through this slowly, allowing your evaluators time to write their notes.

Simple drills often give us the best look at the different skill sets that we coaches need to see in our players. Enjoy training camp; it’s coming soon for all of us!
